First DNA, Forensic lab at Salonga Law center

Crime prevention and investigation got a big boost here following the dedication of the first Visayas DNA and Forensic Laboratory last Thursday at the Salonga Law Center in cooperation with the SU Chemistry Department. This is a big help to our crime investigators even if the lab services only the basic DNA testing.

One of the major problems that the youth faces today is the danger and temptation of illegal drugs. Thus, to help prevent them from engaging in the abuse of illegal drugs and promote a drug-free environment, the Dr. Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development together with the SU College of Law Junior class, initiated an anti-drug campaign to three different high schools – Dumaguete City HS, Taclobo HS and Piapi National HS – in Dumaguete city last January. Aiming to continue what the Junior class has started, the Salonga Center in cooperation with Office of the City Legal Assistance Service conducted an Anti-drug Symposium last August 4, 2011 at the Junob National High School. The symposium was attended by 225 fourth year students of the said school. They attentively listened to the lecture and actively participated during the open forum.

OCLAS and Salonga Center hold Forum on Gender Justice

The Office of the City Legal Assistance Service (OCLAS) in cooperation with Dr. Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development (Salonga Center) held a Forum on Gender Justice last July 28, 2011 at the Moot Court, Villareal Hall, Silliman University. Atty. Sheila Lynn Besario-Catacutan, OCLAS Director and Deputy Director of the Salonga Center, primarily took the initiative to conduct the said forum and invited individuals in the legal profession to speak on the topic, Gender Justice.

Last June 27, 2011, the Municipal Council (Sangguniang Bayan) of Sibulan, Negros Oriental passed a resolution expressing its heartfelt and sincerest thanks and gratitude to the Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law and Development for its continued support and assistance to the municipality.

SILLIMAN University marked World Environment Month in June with a forum spearheaded by the Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law and Development of Silliman University on the proposed ordinance prohibiting the use of plastic shopping bags on dry goods and regulating its utilization on wet goods in the city of Dumaguete on June 23, 2011 at the Moot Court, Villareal Hall, Silliman University.

Salonga Center and GWAVE Conduct Seminars for Barangays

Last May 17-19, 2011, Office of the City Legal Assistance Service in cooperation with the Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law and Development and the Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE) conducted a 3-day seminar to the different lupon members, barangay secretaries and kagawad members coming from a total of 30 local government units in Dumaguete City.

The city’s lack of adequate and efficient waste disposal system is a serious concern that requires immediate attention. The open dumpsite in Barangay Candau-ay beside Banica river has been condemned by many environmental groups and as a matter of fact has already received a Cease and Desist order (CDO) by the DENR for violating provisions regarding sanitary landfills inculcated in the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001 (Article 6, Section 36-41) and the Sanitation Code (Presidential Decree 856).

Salonga Center conducts law enforcement seminar for the Philippine Army

In order to remain true to its oath of protecting the Filipino people against insurgency and other threats to national security, the Philippine Army must not be only well trained but equally armed with the rule of law. This was the goal of the 2-day seminar sponsored by Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center for Law and Development of Silliman University with the initiative of the 302nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and the Negros Oriental Philippine National Police on March 28-29, 2011 at Camp Leon Kilat, Tanjay entitled “Law Enforcement Seminar for the Philippine Army. Volunteers of the Salonga Center trooped to Tanjay city to train about 40 members of the Philippine Army.
