LEGAL EDUCATION & TRAINING

       This component designs and develops short-term training programs and non-degree courses for members of the legal profession, students, community leaders, researchers, policy makers, government personnel and non-governmental organizations.

       The short term-programs shall aim to discover and transmit knowledge of the law so as to achieve developmental justice for all.

Programs for students shall instill in them ethical responsibilities of the legal profession and the social responsibility for the attainment of a just and humane society.

       For the members of the legal profession, the program will serve the requirements of the mandatory continuing legal education of the Supreme Court. To achieve this end, the Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center shall see to it that it will be accredited as a MCLE provider.

       For the other clientele, this component shall ensure that training programs shall serve the ends of community in particular and the nation in general. The Dr. Jovito R. Salonga Center shall develop programs on Katarungang Pambarangay, Alternative Modes of Dispute Resolution, the teaching of practical law for elementary, high and college students and other programs designed to enhance knowledge of the law by government officials and non-governmental organizations.

       The concept of service-learning as pedagogy of teaching shall be promoted by the Center in its educational programs. Service-Learning endeavors to make students achieve their full potential, instilling in them the ideal of what constitutes leadership and responsible citizenship. It is the teaching/learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning, personal growth and civic responsibility. As such, it is a method of collaboration between the law school and the community with the following features:

1. The students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that meet actual community needs;

2. It is integrated into the student’s program of study with the professor providing the structured time for students to analyze and relate what each one did during the actual service activity; and

3. It enhances what is taught in law school by extending student learning beyond the classroom and into the community - helping each learner to foster the development of a sense of caring for others.
